Wardrobe Basics: A Basic Black Dress

I don't like dictating what you should and shouldn't wear, but I believe a basic black dress is a must, must-have. I don't think there is anything more important than a basic black dress in a woman's wardrobe, maybe apart from good underwear of course. You can own it in any form: a maxi dress, a sheath dress, a shift dress, a skater dress, a mini dress, a slip dress, a wrap dress, name it (hmmmm, I think this warrants a post on the types of dresses don't you think?)

How To Style a Black Dress
The beauty of having such a classic, versatile piece in your wardrobe is that you can style it in a multitude of ways for a wide variety of occasions. Here are four different ways you can wear a black dress. I chose different ones but you can always restyle the same dress by switching accessories and lip colour.

1. To Work

I paired it with a blazer, heels and a statement necklace. A black dress is the perfect canvass to display your statement necklaces. A structured bag completes this work outfit.

2. Night Out

For a night out, I prefer sequins, tights and comfortable heels, flats or wedges if you want to dance all night.

3. Relaxed Weekend

When I think of weekends, I think of turbans. Ok, I'm a little obsessed but they are so great and perfect for those bad hair days. Accessorize with gladiator sandals, a bucket bag and you are good to go.

4. Rocker Chic

I think I have a goth side. See, I love black, leather, combat boots, dark lipstick, black nail polish, piercings, tattoos...OK, enough, back to the post. Pair your black dress with black combat boots or any ankle boots for that matter, add a leather jacket (on my wishlist for the longest time), a chunky necklace and a darker lip.

WHAT I WORE: Striped Maxi

Hi all!!! I hope you're having a fantastic week. I have just discovered that even though stripes are in, (1) I don't own nearly as much striped clothes as I would like and (2) I really don't like being pushed into a box when it comes to selecting an outfit. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed seeing how other Kenyan bloggers have interpreted the stripe-trend. But I think I'd like to take it slow when it comes to style challenges. Enough said, I wore this maxi dress to run a few errands last week. It was still warm out then so I covered up this sleeveless dress with a purple shirt (I hate sun burn and that sun was brutal!!). Flats and my all-purpose handbag served to complete my errand-running outfit.   Outfit Details: Maxi dress: borrowed from my sister Blouse: Sarojini Market, India Flats: Ngara, Nairobi Handbag: Bus Station, Nairobi Necklace: Sarojini Market, India How do you feel about style challenges? MONDAY STYLIST: 3 WAYS TO WEAR BLACK TROUSERS

Hi!!! I hope you had a fabulous weekend. I spent mine catching up with my chores and my reading which has been piling. I also managed to do diys which I hope to complete in the course of the week. I didn’t quite manage to do everything I had hoped but at least I accomplished something. Black trousers are a wardrobe must-have in any girls’ wardrobe. They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. In today’s Monday Stylist, I want to give you three simple ways to dress up your black trousers for 3 different occasions. 1. Working Girl For this look I chose a sheer top with Peter-Pan collar, a cobalt blue tuxedo jacket and black heels and handbag. Depending on your office dress-code, you can pull out some bright colours to cheer you up (and your colleagues as well). Pairing red and blue is a good way to do this. Add stud-earrings for a simple yet chic office look. 2. Night Out When on a night out, you can opt to pull out all the stops. I went for a

Fashion trends I'm loving in 2021

I fell in love with fashion as a child and this blog became my outlet. I love experimenting with clothes, trends, fabrics and over the years, I have settled in my preferred style preferences and these play a big role in my outfit and purchasing choices. This, however, doesn't mean that I am averse to fashion trends. I look to them for ideas on how to update my wardrobe and style my pieces anew. While I don't buy heavily into trendy pieces, I will consider and purchase pieces that I know I love and can wear for a few years, even after the trend has passed. That being said, with 2020/2021 bringing change in how we consume fashion - we spent a year cooped up indoors and hence had no need for fancy clothes and shoes - I must say that there are some trends that I have fallen in love with and can hardly wait to get my hands on. Let's get into it. (Photo: Pinterest/ Style Pantry ) 1. Wide-leg trousers I love slim fit trousers and skinny jeans. I love how versatile they are and I h
